“Greatness is a lot of small things done well. Day after day, workout after workout, obedience after obedience, day after day.” These are the inspiring words of former professional American football player, New York Times best-selling author, and motivational speaker Ray Lewis.

The idea is that to achieve what you want from life, whether learning a new skill or living a healthier lifestyle, it’s essential to establish a routine. Looking at the bigger picture is great, but it’s also important to look at the smaller ones and recognize the benefits of improving yourself step-by-step.

Many people doubt their ability to reach their goals because they are overwhelmed by the journey and the size of their dreams.

Why? Well, firstly, there isn’t a magic formula or a shortcut to long-lasting success. Experiencing the trials and tribulations of this process is part of your development and vital to overcoming future obstacles. Secondly, many people doubt their ability to reach their goals because they are overwhelmed by the journey and the size of their dreams. Focusing on attainable little things will help you stay on your path.

‍This philosophy is shared by highly-successful founders Mimi and Alex Ikonn, who co-founded Intelligent Change, the company behind the best-selling ‘Five-Minute Journal’ and the app Habits for which UI design we are responsible.

“In order to succeed in becoming the person we want to be, we must first be capable of imagining exactly who that person is. We set goals and create a clear vision of where we want to go and what we want to embody. We identify our best qualities and the ones we wish to improve upon. We use vision to achieve greatness. Hard work becomes meaningful as we take every step toward our vision”, explains Alex.

Through Intelligent Change, Alex and Mimi’s mission is to help people create a positive change in their lives through routine and continuous learning. Mimi says, “when we shift our mindset to the positive, we shift our reality, too. We become more confident and secure in our thinking. We achieve greater results. This doesn’t mean that we ignore the bad things in our lives. It means we focus on the positive and pursue joy, growth, and gratitude in what we do and experience.”

A beautiful UI for a beautiful purpose

Habits is a tracking app that allows users to identify their strengths and weaknesses and pinpoint key areas for improvement. “Measuring and tracking are key to understanding if we are achieving optimal performance,” says Alex, believing that an app would make us hold accountable for our development, thus keeping us honest about what we’ve accomplished and where we need to improve. “I’ve tried many habit trackers, and I haven’t found any that meet my usability and design requirements.”

With clear ideas on how they wanted the app to look and function, Alex and Mimi teamed up with Z1 to make this habit-tracking app a reality. Habits allows users to keep tabs on their progress while encouraging them to stick to their personalized, plan-based goals.

We put loads of effort into organizing the content in a way users feel ultra comfortable with.

With a look and feel dictated by the already successful Intelligent Change brand, we put loads of effort into organizing the content in a way users feel ultra comfortable with. Regarding the illustrations, the app has plenty of them, Fran Pulido made them freehand, taking advantage of the natural flaws of this process and the overlapping of different areas as a sign of personality.

“The pieces had almost no development in the sketch phase. As soon as I had a composition that I liked and fit in the interface, I made the final result in Photoshop. This added a high volume of spontaneity and naturality to the final result,” explains our illustrator, and this way, Habits turned out one of the finest UIs we’ve ever designed.
